Sun Sentinel: Telemundo’s Lisa Morales just wants to have fun

Telemundo personality Lisa Morales says she’s a bit of a daredevil.

On “Nitido,” which airs 11:30 a.m Saturdays, the Miami native (along with co-host Dayanis Garcia) shows off her athleticism by taking part in activities such as indoor skydiving, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, kart-racing and foot volley (a Brazilian game that combines volleyball and soccer.)

Her most-daring feat yet: swimming with sharks. “I’m really afraid of sharks, so I was supernervous to get into the water.” she says.

Thanks to her toned physique and killer looks, the 26-year-old Sunny Isles Beach resident is one of Maxim’s “Hometown Hotties” which is the magazine’s bikini version of a Playmate. On Thursday, she and some sexy friends attended a meet-and-greet bash at New Era’s flagship store in Miami Beach.

Although Morales earned the “Hottie” title two years ago, the brunette still works for the men’s magazine as a spokeswoman, hosting events and mentoring hopefuls who want to learn what it takes to appear in Maxim.

“I think it’s every girl’s dream to be in Maxim,” she says. “But for me, it came as a shock … to be chosen out of hundreds of girls, and then to make it to the top 10. I felt so lucky and appreciative of my fans who voted for me.”

Morales, who wouldn’t comment on her love life, says she enjoys her sex-symbol status, but wants to be taken seriously as a model and TV star.

“Everyone always tells me, ‘Oh, you’re so gorgeous. … How do you all those crazy, athletic things on TV?’ “ she says. “But not only do I work out five times a week, I’m not afraid to get down and dirty.”

Even if this means swimming with Jaws again.

“I like the outdoors,” Morales says, “and the more-adventurous the activity, the more fun I’m going to have.”

Surprising Discussion on New Times Blog Following Tim Elfrink’s 8/31/2011 Article

Posted below on the SIB Reporter is Tim Elfrink’s article entitled “Isaac Aelion, Sunny Isles Beach Commish Gets Year of Probation for Shady Campaigning.”  We posted that last year when it was published.  While the article has not changed, the blog underneath it has recently become a discussion forum.  The recent activity was kicked off by  a writer calling himself “What really happened” (WRH), who is believed to be Commissioner Isaac Aelion defending and justifying his crime and lack of public apology.  WRH, whose identity has not been confirmed,  posted the following (in part):

Sometimes in life one is confronted with a situation where one has to choose between acting at a sacrifying cost to save a City from bad elements coming to City Hall , or stay inactive and allow those bad elements to take over City Hall and create a downward trend for the City and all its residents.
This Joan of Arc paid the heavy price and got wounded protecting the City, and will always carry the scars of the wound with pride, because at the end of the day a great service was rendered to the residents of this beautiful City.

There were various responses to this posting, some quite funny, which I encourage you to read by clicking on the link at the end of this section.  Below is the response that I think best addresses WRH:

Mr. “What really happened” — The problem with your statement is a logical fallacy known as a false dilemma.  You present the “facts” as if there were only two choices for the SIB Joan of Arc. 1) Save the City by breaking the law or 2) be inactive.  The third obvious choice is to be active and remain within the bounds of the law.   Because Mr. Aelion could not fathom this third option, or any other option that was even close to ethical, Sunny Isles Beach now has the dubious distinction of having a sitting commissioner on probation.  No matter how much Mr. Aelion may wish for this to go away, what he did was so offensive to the voters who trusted him  and so embarrassing to  the city, that the scandal will not simply be swept under the rug.  Time has not been kind in this respect.  The residents remember.  The residents talk about it.  The residents resent it.  And rightfully so.

Hours after the Commission Meeting on June 21, 2012, where Jeniffer Viscarra asked, once again, for Commissioner Aeilion’s public apology to the residents of Sunny Isles, WRH posted the following:

When a soldier in battle sees a dangerous situation which may kill his fellow soldiers and takes action to save them even if his superior tells him to stay put, he is braking the law by refusing a direct order, but in the process saves the lives of his fellow soldiers.
Conclusion: He broke the law, but he also saved lives, so he is a hero !!!

The timing and tone of the last WRH posting would point to Commissioner Isaac Aelion as the author of the statement, which explains why in the span of ten months there has been no public apology for the elections-related crime.  Based on the posted comments, it is clear that he does not think he owes an apology.  He thinks he is above it.  He thinks he is a hero and we should be grateful for the way he “sacrificed” himself into office.

While we have not definitively uncovered WRH’s true identity (nor do we intend to), there seems to be no doubt in the minds of those who have engaged WRH on this blog.

One of the responses reads, in part:

Hero?  Saint?  You fashion yourself a hero and also a saint?   Listen up St. Isaac of Sunny Isles Beach; just because you claim to have been an officer in the Israeli army doesn’t make you a hero.  You made your way to the U.S. by way of several countries and began your amazing HEROIC, SAINTLY business career; selling alcohol and bingo cards.  Peddling to the weak although I’m sure you think yourself a purveyor of fine wines and entertainment.

Another response reads, in part:

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary – Definitions of the word “Hero”

(1) Hero – a man admired for his achievements and qualities: brave, courageous, gallant, greathearted, noble – NONE OF THESE apply

Webster’s also has another definition for the word “hero” and this is the one that applies to Isaac Aelion

(2) Hero – a large sandwich on a long split roll filled with lots and lots of bologna and ham

No doubt about it…Aelion belongs to #2 – lots and lots of bologna and ham.

We are not making this up.  For full context, please go the the article by clicking on the link that follows and read everything for yourself.  Feel free to join the conversation initiated by WRH (who may be Isaac Aelion or somebody who seems to know the inner workings of his mind).  The blog is at the bottom of the article, which you can see by clicking here:   http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2011/08/isaac_aelion_sunny_isles_beach.php

Miami Herald: Sunny Isles Beach Looking For New City Manager

By Lidia Dinkova, Special to the Herald

After one year of serving as the Sunny Isles Beach city manager, Alan Cohen resigned from the job. He cited “personal reasons” in a resignation letter he submitted June 20.

“I am very proud in what I was able to accomplish in the time that I was there. There are many good people that I would miss,” Cohen told The Miami Herald. He declined to elaborate on the reasons for his departure.

The city has been looking for a new manager and hopes to announce a candidate and bring him or her up for a vote at next commission meeting on July 19, said Mayor Norman Edelcup.

In the meantime, Police Chief Fred Maas has been appointed to serve as the interim city manager. At the June 21 commission meeting, commissioners and the mayor unanimously approved the motion to accept Maas to serve on an interim basis.

Here are some of the capital improvement projects the city moved forward with while Cohen was the city manager: Demolition and reconstruction of the Newport Fishing Pier that is to be finished by the end of the year, beautification projects and a sound study at the skate park at Town Center Park. The skate park has been at the heart of some contention in the community because of the noise made from children skateboarding there. The city has set aside $50,000 in the current fiscal year’s budget for a company, Stanley Consultants, to do the sound study and also come back with three options how to alleviate the noise.

Cohen said he is particularly proud of the work he did within city hall, improving employee morale, keeping communication open and “taking a true interest in what your employees are doing.”

He served as city manager for an annual salary of $180,000, an amount negotiated when he was hired in spring 2011, according to the city’s Human Resources Department.

For more information on how to apply for the city manager position, call the Human Resources Department at 305-792-1708.

Miami Herald: Thee Dollhouse Resurfaces in North Miami

Actual title of the Miami Herald Article:

NORTH MIAMI LIFTS BAN ON LIQUOR SALES IN STRIP CLUBS

By Paradise Afshar

After nearly four hours of discussion, a divided North Miami City Council voted Tuesday to repeal an ordinance that banned the sale and consumption of alcohol and adult entertainment in the same establishment.

The decision came down to a 3-2 vote with the dissents coming from Councilman Michael Blynn and Mayor Andre Pierre, who had voted for the repeal on first reading.

“We had the opportunity to listen to what the pros and the cons were, and there were very persuasive arguments on both sides,” Pierre said. “I kept going back and forth.”

Tuesday night’s meeting drew a large crowd to the council chambers. Many residents had to sit in the lobby area or stand because of a lack of space.

The Sunny Isles Eatery, the group that asked for the ordinance change, explained its plan to invest nearly $2 million into the former Locks Co. building at 2050 NE 151st St., to open an adult-entertainment club.

Although there are several other adult entertainment clubs surrounding North Miami, such as Dean’s Gold and Swinging Richards, this will be the only one of its kind within the city limits.

For Blynn the choice to vote against lifting the alcohol ban came down to morality.

“We have a high moral standard in our community, and we are not going to lower them,” said Blynn. He added the mix of alcohol and nudity would tarnish the family-friendly image of the city. “Good people do not attend places of that nature.”

But Councilman Scott Galvin said the council wasn’t in the position to judge morality.

“It’s not for the North Miami City Council to legislate morality,” said Galvin. “If I am opposed to liquor, it doesn’t mean I have to shut down every liquor store in the area.”

Prior to picking the North Miami site, the Sunny Isles Eatery ran Thee Dollhouse, which later changed its name to Beach House Cabaret, on Sunny Isle Beach.

The location closed after the city decided to create a park in the area the club stood, according to Jeff Cazeau, the attorney representing Sunny Isles Eatery.

“This is a business that wants to be a good neighbor,” Cazeau said. “We’re talking about 100 people employed when the club opens.” That number does not include dancers.

Cazeau assured the council and residents that his clients have made agreements with the city about the look and operations of the club, which include no flashing neon signs with words such as “girls, girls, girls,” and the club will open mid-afternoon to accommodate concerns about it operating during school hours, according to Cazeau.

Sunny Isles Eatery has also agreed to hire two off-duty North Miami police officers on site nightly for its first six months in business. That number will go down to one off-duty officer, and ultimately, the need for police presence will be discussed with the city manager.

The company also agreed to donate $100,000 to a charity to be selected in consultation with the city manager.

But many residents strongly opposed allowing adult-entertainment bars in the city.

“I believe it is wrong as it exploits women,” said Pastor Jack Hakimian of Impact Miami Church, adding some of his worries center around human trafficking, prostitution and the impact the club will have on families.

Hakimian was one of several local clergy who spoke to the morality of having such a club within the city’s boundaries.

MIAMI NEW TIMES: Isaac Aelion, Sunny Isles Beach Commish, Gets Year of Probation for Shady Campaigning (09/2011)

(Article Summarized Below)

Consider: Last fall, voters in Sunny Isles Beach had three choices for city commission. One of them, Isaac Feldman, was later arrested for his role running an amazing South Beach scam involving Eastern European “B-girls.” Now, his opponent and the eventual winner — businessman Isaac Aelion — has been caught red-handed spending thousands on illegal campaign ads and sentenced to a year of probation.

Hindsight is 20/20, Sunny Isles voters, but maybe you should have gone for Jeniffer Viscarra, the candidate who eventually lost to Aelion in a runoff?

Aelion was found guilty yesterday of a first-degree misdemeanor stemming from a flyer he surreptitiously sent to 8,500 voters around town before the December election.

His trouble with the law began last November, when the Miami-Dade ethics commission started looking into a flyer attacking Viscarra and Michael Schnitzer, who was running against the town’s mayor, Norman Eddlecup.

Now he’ll have to serve one year of probation, repay $4,000, and serve 35 hours of community service.

WLRN Blog: Surfers Paddleboard from Bimini to Sunny Isles for Anti-Plastic Campaign

North of the Bahamas is an Atlantic gyre which is a huge collection of floating plastic debris trapped between powerful currents.

Recently, two Miami surfers attempted to be the first ever to paddle, standing up, through whatever they would find on their adventure from Bimini to Miami.

Thaddeus Foote, an environmental educator by day, says his goal is simple: to tell people to stop using plastic.

“Nobody likes a dirty beach, dirty water but everybody still uses plastic bottles, everybody still uses plastic bags and what we want to do is have people start the conversation like we’re doing right now.”

In the dark of night, about 3:30 in the morning, the two Miami surfers departed from Cat Cay in Bimini, on their standup paddle surfboards. With the Gulf Stream pushing them northward, they encountered lots of floating plastic pieces along their 60 mile trek.

Fellow Surfer, and creative director Bill Whiddon says they grabbed as much plastic as they could and tossed it into to the catamaran boat following them.

“It’s not just full containers, it’s pieces and that’s the problem . You get these little teeny pieces of styrofoam you get these pieces of plastic bags and things like that that are disintegrating and that’s where the problem really is.”

Finally after 17 hours 11 minutes and 43 seconds.. the two waterman landed on Sunny Isles Beach to crowds cheering and champagne corks popping.

“Good to see you all.. thanks for coming out. I’m happy to talk to someone else but him. It’s been nothing but him for 17 hours and 11 minutes,” Foote says.

Much of the plastic debris is ingested by marine life and damaging to the seabeds it contaminates.

For these guys, the message is clear.  “Don’t leave stuff on the beach or on your boat that can blow out. Better yet, don’t use it. Use recycle bottles, reusable bags.”

Channel 7: Small Hammerhead Shark Washes Ashore in Sunny Isles (06/11/2012)

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Beach goers’ jaws dropped on a South  Florida beach when a shark hit the sands and washed ashore.

A nearly two-and-a-half foot long hammerhead shark tried to beach itself on  Sunny Isles Beach, Sunday.

“There was a guy next to me getting up on a chair, and he was like going  like this, ‘Oh, my God, a shark!'” said one woman.

Beach goers in the area were shocked to see the animal flipping around in  ankle deep water near the shore. “On this beach? No, no, very rarely do sharks  ever come in on the beach,” said one man.

Cell phone video captured the shark performing a death roll-like move while  washing onto shore.

The shark sighting brought in crowds by the dozens- everyone armed with  smart phone in hand capturing the seemingly wounded animal. “And he looked like  he was caught and released before, he was missing a fin,” said Sam Bud, who  witnessed the shark rescue “And they took it down there about a mile in the  middle but he’s gonna swim back this way. He was looking for help.”

One man got up close and personal with the shark and tried to push it back  into the water, yet the hammerhead just struggled too close to the shore.

At some point, two men used their personal watercraft to haul the hammerhead  back into deep open water.

Although some people said the shark was never a danger to people, others  found it disturbing. “We were actually pretty surprised how close it go to us,”  said Cody Schurgin.

Hammerheads could potentially be dangerous, though they rarely attack  humans. Wildlife experts say you should always call authorities rather than to  help a beached shark yourself.
